Producer

Clemens and Rita Busch inherited his parents’ winery and vineyards in 1984. Clemens was already a pioneer in the practice of organic viticulture, abandoning herbicides as early as 1976. In the early 80s his philosophy became more clearly defined as he met other Mosel producers interested in following these methods. His experimentation with low sulphur levels began around the same time; although he has made wines with zero sulphur, he thinks the combination of Riesling and the Lower Mosel terroirs calls for small additions to achieve the best results.

Most of their production comes from the Pündericher Marienburg, a south-southwest-facing entire hillside vineyard overlooking the village of Pünderich, at the beginning of the Lower Mosel. Despite inheriting only 2 hectares from his parents, they now own 16 of the 25 hectares that make up the entire vineyard, having taken advantage of any opportunity to buy small plots as they became available. Although the whole vineyard is nowadays known as Marienburg, this name used to belong to only one section. In 1971, a law was declared to unify the different terroirs to make it easier for the consumer to understand. Clemens was never in favour of this unification due to the difference in soils, expositions and other variables found on each plot, and thus, still vinifies and bottles each of them separately.
