Tamdhu

SPEYSIDE, SCOTLAND

Meaning 'little dark hill'Tamdu was founded in 1897 by a group of people wanting to make their own whisky.  It very quickly moved into the hands of Highland Distillers, the company that later bought Macallan and Highland Park.  Tamdhu was the whisky that was put into blends such as The Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark, and in the later years of the 20th century, the single malts from this distillery were inconsistent at best and the brand suffered.  This wasn't helped by the more prestigious and greater promoted Macallan, which was within the same stable of distilleries, which was a direct competitor.  In 2010 the distillery was closed.

Then Ian MacLeod Distillers came along and in June 2011, bought the distillery with a lot of aged stock.  Redesigning the packaging and ensuring quality whisky went in the bottle, Ian MacLeod have injected a whole new lease of life into this distillery and the liquid, particularly when older malts are released, are going to give many of the 'establishment' distilleries a run for their money.  The main problem they have is that the distillery is horrifically ugly and not a great tourist attraction!
