Austrian wine is like a jubilant mountain yodel captured in a bottle—crisp, electric, and surprisingly sophisticated. While the country is a global leader in high-quality, sustainable viticulture, it doesn't take itself too seriously, famously serving its "chuggable" young wines in lively Heuriger (wine taverns). The undisputed star is Grüner Veltliner, a zesty white grape known for its signature "Pfefferl" (white pepper) kick, but Rieslings, Saint Laurent and Blaufrankisch are other stars in this country.
