CAMPO DE BORJA, SPAIN
With origins back in 1958 when the Cooperative of Borja was founded, and Borsao was first registered as a brand, it is since 2001 when the co-op became a company and its 620 members became shareholders, that the company has started its climb to excellence.
Campo de Borja is Garnacha (Grenache) central - it is an area with almost 7,500 hectares of vineyards, and over 60% of that is planted with this grape. The other thing going for it is that a sizeable chunk of the vineyards are old, with two fifths of the Garnacha planting being over 30 years old, with the result being complex, dark, concentrated wines.
Love him/hate him wine critic Robert Parker loves the wines from Borsao saying "If you have not yet discovered the great values of Bodegas Borsao, it’s about time you do."
