Founded by Baron von Breummer, a truly fascinating man, when he was 96, Casal Sta. Maria is a testament to the remarkable nature of human life. After escaping persecution during the Russian Revolution, von Breummer bounced around Europe, dodging death and working a myriad of odd-jobs. Finally after undergoing an operation in Zurich, Baron von Breummer had the sudden inspiration to start making wine. With a beautiful estate on the coast just north of Lisbon, Casal Sta. Maria and Baron von Breummer have begun reviving the Colares DOC.
