Frederic Mabileau
LOIRE, FRANCE
Although his family has history in winemaking dating back to 1620, Frederic only began his own journey in 1988 when he planted his first parcel of Cabernet Franc. Today, his estate is comprised of 28 hectares spread out across Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, Bourgueil, Saumur and Anjou. In 2005, Mabileau moved away from mechanized harvesting in favour of hand picking the grapes; this resulted in the vines growing stronger and the wines being higher quality and displaying stronger mineral notes. Following this success, Mabileau decided to continue moving towards organic principles, eventually gaining his certification in 2010. His wines are marked by a bright freshness that explodes on the palate with rich red fruit and blueberries without tasting over-extracted; the fruit notes are offset by a lovely, brooding, earthiness which gives the wine a bit of mystique and always brings you back for another sip.
