Domaine M & S Ogier
AMPUIS, RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE
Up until relatively recently the entirety of their crop was sold to Maison Chapoutier and Maison Guigal. Quite rightly Michel realised he was growing outstanding grapes so he may as well make outstanding wine. Michel spent a great amount of time and effort bringing his wine up through the ranks until finally handing over the reins to his son Stephane.
Situated in the Ampuis Commune in the Rhone Department and producing some truly tremendous wines Stephane has taken on the mantle of his father well. Unlike other Cote Rotie producers they are silkier, softer and more subtle, the rapier to Cote Rotie's (admittedly brilliant) broadsword. Much like Scotland winning a major rugby tournament, Ogier producing a wine that is less than spectacular is one of the signs of the apocalypse.
