ADELAIDE HILLS, AUSTRALIA
A lot of things started in the back of a Volkswagen campervan. NO NOT THAT! I mean great ideas have come from holidays in the back of these iconic buses, and Ochota Barrels is one of them. On a surf trip on the Mexican west coast, Taras and Amber Ochota came up with the idea of making some great wine back home in Australia.
They decided to focus on Grenache and Syrah, but found some old plots of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Adelaide Hills. Mostly farmed organically or biodynamically, the wines are made simply, fermented with indigenous yeasts, wholebunch fermented and long maceration periods. Their wines are fabulous expressions of the grapes, and Taras' pedigree (working at Two Hands and Nepenthe) has proven he hasn't lost his touch for making good wine.
