Producer
The farm was purchased by the Rands family in 2012, with brother and sister, Svend and Abigail, being greatly involved in all aspects of the estate, from vineyard plantings to marketing. The lead in the winemaking division is renowned Cape winemaker, cellarmaster Rudiger Gretschel, sharing his considerable knowledge into both the viticulture as well as the vinification, working alongside head winemaker Stephan de Beer.
Nature drives the making of these wines, going from soild to vine to bottle, with the winemaking team channeling the rain, sun and wind into qualities of the wines.
The site-specific rocky soils of Tulbagn are comparable to no where else in the Cape Winelands. The vineyards run up the eastern slopes of the Saronsberg Mountain (also known as "the rainmaker" due to the rain-shadowing effect it has, created by the peak) and is protected from the intensity of the Cape's summer South-Easter as the vineyards are elevated from the valley floor and benefit from the cool airflow that descends the mountain slopes by night. Ripening in this area occurs, on average, two weeks earlier than in the majority of the other wine reagions in the Western Cape, allowing the grapes to retain their natural acidity which is so important for these wines.
The tradition of the Night Harvest is still carried out, dating back to the 1980s. This ensures the preservation of grape quality and the delicate aromas and flavours.
