MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND
Graeme and Linda Cowley bought a patch of land that didn't have any grapes on it, yet they had actually bought the Marlborough region's first vineyard. When David Herd arrived in 1854 he opted not to become a sheep farmer and planted vines in 1873. Between then and 1905 when he died he made wine on the Auntsfield Estate, and then this was taken over by his son-in-law until 1931.
Now the estate in the hands of Graeme and Linda's sons, Ben and Luc, the business is still very much a family affair. With Ben looking after the viticulture and his brother Luc making the wine, they are producing stunning wines and are contributing more to the history of this legendary estate.
