Speyside Malts, from the region around the river Spey, is the most concentrated area of distilleries in Scotland. A lot of the famous names are there, but, as with everything, we focus on the great whiskies that are value for money, not the showy big names.
As with all the other regions, we focus on independent bottlers, with some super expressions of well and lesser known distilleries.
Do look at Tamdhu as well. Once owned by Macallan, they closed and sold the distillery in 2012 and new owners, Ian Macleod Distillers, have done a brilliant job with this super distillery.
Rich sherry flavours with forest fruits and a delicate smoke note. This whisky takes you back to the 1930s when Speyside malts tended to have a touch of peat.
Ignore everything you've been told about whisky needing to be over 10 years old. The barrel selection has improved so much over the past few decades that young whisky is very much drinkable now, and delicious.
Originally in a bourbon hogshead, then finished in an Oloroso cask, it has lots of mint, cinnamon and raisins on the nose. The palate has chocolate and vanilla ice cream covered in strawberry sauce!
