Fattoria di Sammontana
TUSCANY, ITALY
Founded Late 19th Century - Owners Descendants of Michele Szieduszycki - Trivia Organic Producer
When Polish nobleman Michele Dzieduszycki moved to Tuscany with his family over a hundred years ago, he started making wine. Now the fourth generation of this family, Andrea, has taken over the property and is making big changes.
Firstly a conversion to organic production (certified from the 2012 vintage) and doing biodynamic trials as well. The 18 hectare vineyards slope down the hill and have "ungrateful" soil - basically a stoney, poor quality soil - which makes it perfect for grapes and olives, and they have around 3000 olive trees around the vineyards too! Then once in the cellar, they ferment the grapes in concrete, allowing the natural yeasts to do their job with no filtration - a very hands off production that results in lovely wines.
