Port is my favourite type of wine. I adore the fact that it is a wine that, when at its best, will outlive not only me, but my two year old son, and is not, yet, commanding the obscene prices that Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux do for the finest wines in the category.
But there are other fortified wines from the Iberian peninsula out there which tickle my tastebuds just as much, even if they don't capture my heart as much. Sherry - anything from bone dry subtlety to rich, sticky and ballsy and Madeira - an elegant oxidised wine that, like it's Portuguese sibling, will achieve greatness with age.
