Padro & Co Blanco Reserva Vermouth 75cl

£24.95 GBP

Tasting Note

Aromatically intense and very pleasant. Memories of sweet herbs such as star anise, lemon verbena, quina and angelica. Both well-balanced and complex.

An elegant, smooth, refined and well-rounded palate with a slight sweetness, and also a certain bitterness. An elegant and citrus fruit finish ensures freshness and a superb aftertaste giving this vermouth a gourmet touch.

Producer

This company has been passed down through generations since their winemaking origins in 1886 in the village of Brafim, Tarragona (an agricultural hub at this time with around 400 inhabitants). The first generation of wine-making Padros (Daniel Padro Porta, 1846-1890, and his wife Rosa Valldosera) began with sales of wines and liqueur wines from their fairly humble establishment of just one press and a small amount of distillery equipment. These were then loaded onto carts in large but basic barrels and sold directly from there.

The second generation (Daniel Padro Valldosera, 1875-1953, and Juan Padro Valldosera, 1878-1966) joined the business at a young age and it was them who gave PADRO's industrial activity a real entrepreneurial push, moving the distillery to larger premises (what is now the current site) and in 1916, building the first of the three main buildings that today make up Padro & Co, with a further warehouse added in 1932.

The children of these two brothers, Daniel Padro Armengol (1914-2013) and Francisco Padro Busquets (1906-1993), became the thrid generation. They decided to discontinue the production of vermouths and other spirits in order to focus on the production of wines and a range of dry and sweet liqueurs.

The wines were sold in bulk form until 1960 when the fourth generation, Franciso (1934), Daniel (1936-2008) and Jose Maria (1943) Padro Armengol began bottling some of their production in glass as well as wooden boxes for the cooperative stores of large companies that existed at the time.

The current generation (the fifth) continue to follow the same philosophy as their ancestors and produce quality bulk and bottled wine, liqueur wines and vermouths. They are making sure that their company keeps up with modern wine-making processes and technology at their bottling plant as well as extending the family vineyards. They have also implemented a new grape reception and wine storage facility.
